How to Maintain Your Floor Scrubber: A Complete Care Guide

Floor scrubbers work hard with water, detergent and dirt every day, so good maintenance is essential. A few minutes of care after each shift prevents odours, streaky floors and costly repairs. Here is a practical routine for walk-behind, ride-on and autonomous scrubbers.

After Every Use

  • Drain and rinse the recovery tank. Dirty water left overnight causes bad smells, bacteria and clogged hoses. Leave the lid open to air-dry.
  • Empty the solution tank. Do not leave detergent solution sitting in the machine.
  • Clean the debris tray and float filter. A blocked float shut-off will stop suction.
  • Rinse and wipe the squeegee blades. Clean blades are the key to a dry, streak-free floor.
  • Remove and rinse brushes or pads. Hang pads to dry and store brushes off the floor so bristles do not bend.
  • Charge the battery in a ventilated area, and avoid deep discharges.

Weekly Checks

  • Inspect squeegee blades. If the wiping edge is rounded or nicked, flip or rotate the blade to a fresh edge.
  • Flush the vacuum hose and check for blockages or cracks.
  • Clean the solution filter so water flows evenly to the brushes.
  • For lead-acid batteries, check electrolyte levels after charging and top up with distilled water only.

Monthly Maintenance

  • Check brush and pad wear and replace when worn down.
  • Inspect tank seals and gaskets. Leaky seals reduce suction and leave water behind.
  • Clean battery terminals and check cable connections.
  • Descale the solution system if you have hard water.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using too much detergent, or foaming chemicals not recommended for scrubbers. Excess foam can damage the vacuum motor.
  • Leaving dirty water in the recovery tank overnight.
  • Storing the machine with brushes or pads down, which flattens them.
  • Running the scrubber on dry floors without solution, which wears brushes and can scratch surfaces.
